 Monday 10:00 KA1
The Youth3A Bookclub Convenor Bronwen Parr
Over the term opportunity will be provided for members to introduce their own selected book, read excerpts, and provide insight into the author, characters and setting as a basis for instigating discussion of issues raised by the book. It is hoped this may stimulate interest by other members to read the authors. One or more books may be discussed each week. In the fourth and fifth weeks of this term we intend to hold group discussions on “Any work you have read”by Thomas Hardy, the well known English author who has written poetry and novels. Happy reading and researching!

 Monday 10:00 KA3
To Buy or Not to Buy Gifford Causon
We look forward to this topical series of talks about consumerism as it began in the 19th Century. Consumers then were as ‘good if not better’ than we are today! Topics will include: “A nation of clubs and Shopkeepers”, “The 19th Century Shop”, “Domestic consumerism”, “Civic Pride”, “Books and Reading”, “Holidays”, “Sport”, and “Entertainment”.
Gifford is well known to U3A and always gives a thoroughly researched and popular series of talks.

 Monday 11:30 KA1
 Have Your Say Jennie Clarke
Class Limit 18
This popular class is for people who enjoy a robust discussion about current events and subjects of interest. Everyone has their say and participants own their own views and respect those of others. After four wonderful years of Joy Tunney at the helm, the class will now be co-ordinated by Jennie Clarke, an experienced communicator who oddly sees herself as a social (and occasional) hermit.
Jennie was by profession a Nursing Sister and Communication Counsellor / Leader. Her hobbies include writing and portrait painting..

 Monday 11:30 KA3
A History of the Australian Light Horse Nevill Thomas
Australian Light Horse were mounted troops with characteristics of both cavalry and mounted infantry. They served during the Second Boer War and in World War I. This course, from the perspective of a very enthusiastic amateur, will cover a history of the Australian Light Horse from formation to disbandment.
Nevill was a regular soldier for 22 years and has been a member of the Light Horse Association for 15 years. For 40 years he has been a keen collector of militaria.

 Monday 1:30-3:30  KA3
Mae’r Gymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy! Peter Ball
Ten sessions of Welsh language for beginners, emphasising the spoken language, as it is used in Wales today. The sessions are scheduled for two hours, which will include about 30 minutes of light relief with music, video, etc. on Welsh culture. This is to help us progress quickly enough to get a sense of achievement, and still keep our motivation up. If we find that two hours is too much, we'll just shorten the sessions.
The general approach will be based on the very successful “Wlpan” beginners' course regularly run in Wales, which was derived from a system developed in Israel for teaching Hebrew to immigrants. It involves plenty of activity, a lot of talking, and very little writing – a great deal of fun, in other words. Free material from BBC Wales and S4C (Channel 4 Wales) will also be accessible.
Peterfrom Bristol, studied in Hull and Belfast, before lecturing in Uganda. In Tasmania he taught and researched at our Uni in social psychology, psycholinguistics and related fields. His recreational interests include choral singing, art and studying languages.

 Monday 1:30-3:30  KA2
 Writers Group  Marian Hearn
Class limit 15

It is perhaps a measure of the success of the Writing Group that, since starting 8 years ago, 6 writers have independently published books and 2 years ago the Group as a whole combined to produce a collection of their work. However, this is a group where there is no pressure to actively participate at all. Members are welcome to sit and listen until they feel confident to take part.
The class usually starts with an exercise to get the writing started then the results are shared – sometimes thought provoking and often hilarious! After a break for a cuppa there is a chance for those who wish to share a little of their current personal writing – true stories, fiction, and the occasional prose or verse.
By joining this course you will be encouraged to develop your own writing skills and will gain knowledge and inspiration from the work of others
 Tuesday 9:00-onwards  Field
 U3A Bushwalkers  Claire Morgan
Class limit 15

Bush walking is strenuous. We will walk on bush trails in the mountains in and around Hobart and further afield. Duration will be 3 to 5 hours. Participants must have a reasonable fitness level. Please bring lunch along with water and a first aid kit. Wear sturdy walking boots and bring a walking pole if you wish.
On 16th March, the first outing will start with a meeting at the Denison Street car park at 9:30am. New members to this group please phone Claire on 6229 9919 prior to the start of term.

 Tuesday 10:00-12:00 Field
 Strollers and Ramblers  Judy Sprent
 Class limit 15 for each.

Join us for easy walks enjoying nature and fresh air on local and rural tracks and trails for an invigorating, healthy, social activity, ending in a welcome cuppa nearby. We will walk for about 1 to 1½ hours along beaches, river banks, back roads, paths and reserves. Wear sturdy footwear and bring a raincoat, a drink bottle, sunscreen, a hat and basic first aid items. Walking poles/ sticks are often useful. Participants will get information showing the routes, detailing start and end points and contact numbers. Carpooling is encouraged.
As some of the group may like a little more vigorous activity we can arrange ourselves into two groups; the “Ramblers” who walk a little further and the “Strollers” who are more leisurely.
On 16th March, the first outing will start with a meeting in the U3A Kitchen at 10:00am to discuss and decide the walks for the term and complete indemnity forms. Judy is a keen walker and naturalist.

A discussion in the first session could be instructive for all of us in setting out a program for the term. The aim each week will be for members to bring some favourite music to share and inform the group about interesting aspects of the composer, artists and history. This background information can stimulate discussion improving musical knowledge for all of us.
