Have Your SayJennie Clarke
This lively group has been successful for many years. The members, seated in a circle, discuss a wide range of subjects that surround our every-day lives. Sometimes controversial, the rules are fixed, with each member aware that arguing will not be tolerated. Confidentiality within the group assures the members that their opinion stays in the room, this allowing them to speak freely on the issues involved.Jennie co-ordinates this group and has been doing so for a year (or is it two?), following Joy Tunney's retirement. She aims to make sure that everyone sticks to the rules and has their say. A fun and positive group.

Monday 11:30KA3
Youth3A Book ClubSelf Managed
Over the term, opportunity will be provided for members to introduce their own selected book(s) on travel themes. On the first and second week the members will briefly (about 10 minutes each) describe and discuss their reading during the summer. On the 23rd and 30th April the group will discuss the books of George Eliot. In preparation for this, members are encouraged to read one or more of her novels, poetry, or other works - e.g. novels Adam Bede, Middlemarch, Mill on the Floss, Daniel Deronda, and Silas Marner. We will read excerpts, and provide insight into the author, characters, use of language, and settings as a basis for instigating discussion of issues raised by the books. Happy reading!

Creative WritingJennie Clarke
This course will give the members the opportunity to creatively tap their brains and put it all into the written word. It will concentrate on the method and style of writing, with continuous class evaluation. It is also expected that heavy criticism will be aimed at Jennie Clarke's work thus making the class a joint effort, while helping all members to take a closer look at their own style.Jennie prefers to work with a positive and easy-going style and welcomes newcomers and inexperienced members, who just have a yearning to write. She began writing only seven years ago, has written two books and will use the skills of the experts to maximise her tuition.

Monday 1:30 - 2:30KA1
Mae’r Gymraeg yn Hawdd – Welsh is Easy! - BeginnersPeter Ball
Welsh is the most thriving of the Celtic languages and these sessions introduce the spoken language of today, with light relief from music, video, etc about Welsh culture. For rapid progress, sense of achievement and motivation, we shall take advantage of a prizewinning free internet course, “Say Something in Welsh” (www.saysomethinginwelsh.com), CDs or cassettes of which are available for those unable to access the internet themselves. We shall use the SSIW lessons in class and as homework, with extra explanation and practice. Free resources from BBC Wales, S4C (the Welsh TV Channel) and elsewhere will also sometimes be used. SSIW has learners speaking Welsh from the very start, and keeps them talking as their mastery grows. For later in the year, there is another beginners course, from the BBC, which we can use to expand our understanding of grammar and the written language. If you have any questions about the Welsh for beginners program, feel free to contact Peter (6239 1265) before enrolling.Peter, from Bristol, studied in Hull and Belfast before lecturing in Uganda, and then specialised in social psychology, psycholinguistics and related fields at the University of Tasmania. He enjoys choral singing, art and everything about language.

Monday 2:30 - 4:30KA1
Mwy o Gymraeg – Welsh ContinuationMargaret and Guy Nicholson
This course is aimed at those who have completed a beginners’ course and want to improve their command of spoken Welsh. There will be an opportunity each week for class members to speak about their activities in Welsh and to engage in conversation. A range of resources from North and South Wales will be provided and some time will be devoted to the text Teach Yourself Welsh. Articles from the adult learners’ magazine, Lingo Newydd will be used regularly for reading and discussion. There will also be some focus on listening to and singing Welsh songs.Margaret comes from Anglesey in North Wales and Welsh was her first language when she immigrated to Tasmania in her mid-teens. She has kept her Welsh alive through communicating with Welsh speaking family members and friends in Australia and in Wales. Marg’s strength is colloquial Welsh and she is keen to help students with pronunciation and support them in developing confidence in speaking the language.Guy has been learning Welsh from Marg and her family for many years but has studied the language more intensively over the last three. His background has been in history teaching but like Marg he has an interest in languages and experience in using a range of resources to learn on his own. Guy is particularly interested in modern spoken usage.

Australian WritersNoela Foxcroft
Last year we began to look at the lives of some of the well known Australian authors of the times beginning with Katharine Susannah Prichard and Miles Franklin. Noela sought the class views on who else should be included and other authors ranked were Ruth Park, Eleanor Dark, May Gibbs, Daphne Cusack, Ian Idres, Banjo Patterson, Darcy Nyland and Henry Lawson - where to stop!? Well, of course we ran out of time, so in this Term we will look at the lives and works of additional important Australia writers. New class members are most welcome. Noela has tutored in U3A for many years in a variety of subjects. Her enthusiasm, knowledge and experience will rub off on all of us doing this course.

Listening to Music John Culliton
WIKIPEDIA says “Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence. Its common elements are pitch, rhythm, dynamics, and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture.” Then there are those who classify music – Antiquity, Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism, Romanticism, Traditional, World, Folk …. etc. In our music sessions we meander through them all. Sometimes we chat about it, mostly we just listen. If that’s how you like it come and join us.
